David Spence Corder (1929-2006)

by Catherine Corder

DAVID died on November 24th very suddenly, having lived all his life in Mapperley Park, first in Cyprus Road then Hatfield Road and finally on ~~~~~~ Road. After being at Rossall School and then Emmanuel College Cambridge, he practised law in Nottingham.

David was a very keen sportsman, tennis being his favourite. He first joined Magdala Tennis Club in the days when Sunday afternoon tennis was the highlight of the Mapperley Park social calendar.

David joined MPTC in 1965 with his wife and four children and played lots of family tennis, an interest continued by his daughter Jane Scales and his son Martin, who was men's captain from 1990-92. Now his grandson Matthew is a keen junior player. David himself played in the men's team in the 1970s and continued to play Saturday morning tennis at Nottingham University into his seventies.

David always regarded MPTC as an important asset to Mapperley Park and supported the social functions such as Finals Day. He always kept up with the news through The Racketeer. He was a trustee of the club and served on the committee for many years and was president from 1982-87. He was also a Notts LTA Vice President from 1975-2004.
