Winter Report 1992-3

by Geoff Firmin

We had a good winter season following the excellent performance last summer when three of our teams won promotion and two narrowly missed. First mention must go to the second Mixed who clinched promotion in the last match of the season with a resounding victory over the Fringe. Congratulations to captain Andy Lusis and all who served. They will now be in Division 3 next winter, pressing hard to join the first Mixed in Division 2. The latter, captained by Jeremy Freemantle, did very well against tough competition and only narrowly missed promotion.

Our first Men's, returning to Division I after being promoted last winter, were ably captained by Robert Collins and more than held their own against clubs fielding county players, finishing comfortably mid-table. The Men's A found it hard going in Division 3 but survived, as did the Men's B under Malcolm Turner. The Ladies, captained by Cynthia Lindo consolidated their position, winning and losing three matches. The Indoor teams, also captained by Cynthia, have both been promoted.

So overall a good performance during the winter months and thanks to all the captains who always put in a lot of work behind the scenes, particularly this winter with more than the usual number of rearrangements to cope with. We look forward to the summer with quite strong squads, although we could do with a few more team standard ladies. Any introductions would be most welcome.

Club play is of course at the heart of any good club so please come down and mix in whenever possible, particularly Wednesday nights. These are now the social event of the week, especially the first Wednesday of each month which is bar night.

We pride ourselves on being a friendly club so if older members see a new face do say hello, and new members don't hesitate to introduce yourselves. As far as I know nobody bites! Please see any committee member for information about the club or with your suggestions for improvement.

Have a good season.
